Happy New Decade!

Wow. I guess by "tomorrow" I meant see you in 3 months.

That's OK. New Year. New Decade.

Got up earlier than I expected and read the bible a little - "Be anxious for nothing..."

Check out Philippians 4:6 if you like.

Then I prayed and took a shower.

At 11:00 I'm calling a new customer who wants more energy.

How is your New Decade/Year starting?

No matter what has come before, you can make a new start now!

Do it now!

Resolution Poll

Because I had some success this year with my New Year's resolution (for which I asked God's help), I am trumpeting the idea that you can do it, too. Here is a very quick poll to get you thinking in that direction. If you are someone who does goals and not resolutions, so be it. Like somebody said, "Just do it."

Enthusiasm Of An Inspired Moment

Herb Elliot mentioned "resolutions made in the enthusiasm of an inspired moment". Now is the time to make New Year's resolutions. How do you make yours? I didn't make one for a long time and last December 31st, I finally made one. I asked for God's help and it has turned out well. (I don't think I'll gain 20 pounds between now and January 1, 2009 to mess it up!) I urge you to make more than one resolution and differentiate it from goals. If you haven't made a resolution in a while, you can do it now. Ask for our creator's help.

Training was a time where resolutions made in the enthusiasm of an inspired moment were put to personal test.

Currently Down 9 Pounds In 4 Days

While looking for the Perfect Weight America book I noticed that my sweet wife had moved it from its place of honor atop the microwave. Doesn't she know that's where it belongs now? The dog was no help while I looked at the bookshelf. I guess the near constant attention he was giving me meant that he needed to go out, but I just took him out 15 minutes (has it really been an hour?) ago. I made him wait. I found the book near the lamp at the northeast side of the living room and now here we are. The following is from "What the Perfect Cleanse Is All About" on page 132 of Perfect Weight America.

The Perfect Cleanse is a ten-day detoxification cleanse that should be done quarterly in January, April, July, and October. During your ten-day Perfect Cleanse, you will eat five times a day, every two to three hours. Most people eat breakfast around 7:30 a.m., followed by a second meal at 10:30 a.m., lunch at 1:00 p.m., a mid-afternoon meal at 3:30 p.m., and dinner at 6:00 p.m. The first day of each seasonal detox is crucial.

I wish I could say that I planned to do the Perfect Cleanse right now so that you could read about it and then do it in a few weeks. Marianne and I decided it was time to do it for two reasons. One (her reason), we'll get this out of the way and not miss all the parties and foods served there and two (my reason), we'll lose (much more) weight before the end of the year and so not be ridiculously far from the goal I set December 31st, 2007. (See- ask God to help you with your New Year's Resolution(s) on New Year's Eve.)

So here we are. Right now it's between 7:00 and 7:30 a.m. on day five and I'll have some soup in just a little bit. I weighed myself an hour and a half ago and the new reading is...115.4 kilos. Now, remembering that I started at 119.6 kilos (and ignoring the fact that means less than a pound down per month since January, arrrgghh...oh, wait, I'm ignoring that fact...but, I digress...) and that minus the 115.4 equals 4.2 kilos. When you multiply 4.2 kilos by 2.2 you get 9.24 pounds. Voila! And remember - keep walking! (And buy the book and help send my son to Palomar and UCSD!)

New Year's Resolution In February

We are over ten hours into this 6th day of February, 2008. We can start a New Year's Resolution right now if we choose. Or you can simply call it a resolution or a goal. Maybe you had a New Year's Resolution that you petered out on. Maybe you didn't make any resolutions as I did not do for several years. Whatever your situation, you can start over right now. For me, I'm going to add crunches to my daily walking and I'll add them to my count/history at Lime.com, so you can check my progress. Remember, you can do the same. You can even register using another name. I'm DrNetwork at Lime.com. I've told you mine so it's not anonymous, but you get the idea. You can share your online walking/exercise history or not. If you like, I can add your link to Big Man Walking so other people can be encouraged.

The thing is, you will find it helpful to track your progress whether you do keep track online or not. I definitely find it motivating to look back and see what I've done so far. During the next couple of days I will go through the 200 mile mark since the beginning of 2008! That's a motivating factor for me. So is the weight loss. I haven't lost weight every week, but I have most weeks. I see the numbers and I feel the difference. I feel better. I can see results in black and white and if they don't match up with what's happening physically, I can take action to change that. The very first week I noticed that in spite of my walking, I gained weight. There could be more than one reason, but I believe I got it right when I noticed that maybe I got hungrier and ate more than normal during that first week. During the next few weeks I paid closer attention to how much I was eating and it paid off. I even decided not to worry about it on Super Bowl Sunday and I saw the results on Tuesday on the scale. The lesson is that I had the information and was able to make informed choices that actually made a difference because of that information. If I had not kept track of my progress, I would have been less clear or specific in what steps to take to achieve the desired result.

So, set a resolution or a goal and keep track. It might be big or small, but be specific. Me? I will do 15 crunches every day. You might believe that is too easy or too hard. It's what I choose today. I believe it's within the range of exercise I can do that will NOT result in injury or a condition that could either cause or encourage me to do less. I want to keep on going everyday which means I want to lessen the possibility that I will have a recovery time which would mean less exercise overall. In addition, I personally find injuries a little demotivating. So set a goal or goals and if somehow you're reading Big Man Walking and you're not walking or running or exercising, make that part of your goals.

I am walking. You can walk. Please walk today. No matter what.

I'm including links and quotes by or related to or about three people who I believe set goals or resolutions at some point in their life. Those goals have had a big impact in their own life and in the lives of other people. Take a peek and remember that clicking on the title of this post will take you to FreeRice.com.

40 miles in ten days

Forty miles is a good start to the year. Here is just a little bit of trivia because I have played a fair amount of poker in my four and a half decades on this earth. Forty miles is short for the phrase "forty miles of railroad track" which means you have four tens. You hear the phrase "thirty miles" much more often because you make three tens much more often than four tens, which is a very nice hand. So when it's time to show your hand, you turn it over and say, "Forty miles," and the vast majority of the time you hear "very nice hand" in return. Once in a while when you have "forty miles of railroad track" you might hear, "Nice hand, but it's not a winner," because someone has a hand so "big" that it beats four tens.

When you have walked 40 miles in your first ten days of a resolution or on track to a goal, you have a "very nice hand". Now I'm in the middle of my forties and I have 40 miles, a very nice hand, and I would like 40 more and then maybe, 40 more again. Do you have a very nice hand? Would you like 40 more miles? Get a pedometer from wherever you like and get started. Whether it costs $20 delivered or $200 is up to you. Or you can go down to Target or your favorite sports oriented store and get one there. Just do it or something like that. Now. Today. Join me. Join us. OK?

Pushing four miles before dinner

This is day seven of my walking new year. Nearly four miles walked and the sun hasn't gone down yet. Tomorrow I look at the scale and no matter the result, I still have 51 more weeks to go in 2008. How did I get started down this path?

I just decided that I really need to make health more of a priority and walking is something 99% of us can do. So, if I can do it, you can do it, too. I sit a lot and I can feel a huge difference because I'm getting up and walking at least a few times a day. Maybe that's my metabolism getting in gear...

I also know that I'm about 90 lbs. heavier than I was when I met my honey, Marianne, in the 80's. I thought of myself as "husky" from a fairly young age. I don't think you could call me slender after about second grade, but that husky label was a disservice. Even wrestling my freshman year in high school I thought of myself that way, but really, that wasn't close to where I'm at now and many people probably thought I was in fine shape. I kept thinking of myself as heavy until I made it really come true.

Our son, Stuart, will be in college in August or September of 2009 and it will be great to be in much better shape by the time he graduates from high school. We've talked about him being an old man and me being an old, old man in our rocking chairs someday and I would like to be there when that happens.

While I was thinking about New Year's resolutions, my brother was going to the hospital late New Year's Eve with pancreatitis and he was there for days. He's only 51, but he was in incredible pain. I know he can do better, but he'll have to restrict his diet and at least walk on a regular basis. No beer for a long time, if ever, if he wants to make sure that pain doesn't come back. I'm almost 45 and I want to be in a lot better shape when I get to 46, let alone 51.

My honey wants me to be around for a long time, too. And, as someone who enjoys public speaking, this journey will give me more to talk about. Last but not least, I do care about people having better lives, so if I can write about this and some of you find it encouraging enough to make positive changes in your lives, I'm doing more of what I'm supposed to do while I'm here.
